Our city is getting bigger day by day. Urbanisation is at its peak. But something is getting smaller and narrower, that is, our city lanes and footpath. There was a time when people used to walk on footpaths safely, and roads were meant only for the vehicles. Nowadays, many people are expanding their houses and shops beyond their legal limits. They are using the footpaths as the entrance of their houses, extension of their shops or putting their potted plants to occupy the area. As a result, pedestrians are forced to walk on roads that are already half occupied by parked vehicles in most of the places. This results in traffic jams and misfortune accidents leading to the loss of both our precious time and life. The drains by the side of roads are getting fully covered by people to beautify the entrances of their house. As a result, due to heavy rain, water logging is extremely common. Last year, on 1st August in Delhis Ghazipur, a woman and her minor son drowned after falling into a waterlogged drain, an incident that emotionally wrecked everyones heart. Yes, we are not heading on the right roads of urbanisation. Encroachment should be dealt with strictly by our government. Safe footpaths, wider lanes, our ultimate destination.
