In my school, I noticed a serious problem of food being wasted every day during the lunch break. After observing the dustbins near the playground and classrooms for one week, I found that around 3 to 4 kilograms of edible food like chapati, rice, vegetables, and whole fruits are thrown away daily. The main reasons are that students pack more food than they can eat, they dislike certain items, or they buy snacks from the canteen and leave their home tiffin untouched. This wastage affects everyone. Parents spend money and time preparing food that gets wasted, the school has to manage more garbage, and the environment is harmed because decomposing food in landfills produces methane gas. Right now there is no system in our school to measure or reduce this waste. To solve this, I propose starting a "Smart Lunch Program" with two parts. First, we set up a "Share Table" in the lunch area where students can place sealed, packaged food or whole fruits they do not want. Other students can take them freely, following basic hygiene rules. Second, we introduce "Portion Choice" during mid-day meals, where students can ask for a small or regular serving to avoid taking extra. I will form a team of 5 student volunteers from Classes 7 and 8 to monitor the Share Table and weigh the leftover waste daily for three weeks. We will make awareness posters and take a short survey before and after the program to see if students habits change. My goal is to reduce food waste by at least 50% in one month. If successful, this model can be shared with other classes and nearby schools because it is low-cost, student-led, and teaches responsibility.
