The serious problem is broken glass mixed with regular waste injures sanitation workers. It cut through bags, not visible until handled, and can cause serious infection. Sweepers and waste collectors handle hundreds of bags daily with bare or lightly gloved hands. A single piece of exposed glass can cause dip cuts, leading to bleeding, infection or even transmission of bloodborne illness. Lack of public awareness about safe disposal of glass waste worsens the problem. These injuries can lead to loss of workdays and financial burden for low- income workers.
