Stormwater drainage systems are commonly built along highways and roads to prevent water accumulation during rainfall. However, it is often observed that some modern concrete drainage channels have steep walls and smooth surfaces that may trap small animals and reptiles.
In many situations, reptiles, amphibians, and other small animals may accidentally fall into roadside drains while crossing roads or moving through nearby natural areas. Due to the depth and smooth concrete surfaces, escaping from these drains may become difficult.
I have observed roadside drainage structures where trapped animals may face dehydration, injury, starvation, or difficulty escaping back into their natural environment. Such infrastructure may unintentionally affect local biodiversity and wildlife movement.
Apart from ecological impact, these drainage systems may also create hidden environmental barriers in regions close to forests, fields, or natural habitats. This problem highlights the importance of wildlife-sensitive infrastructure planning and safer drainage design practices.
