In our modern medical system, a major problem is unequal access to respiratory-health screening. For the lowest-income groups, the medical system has become unaffordable, so fewer people gain early awareness of their lung health, contributing to higher undiagnosed rates of diseases such as COPD and asthma (research published in the Journal of Global Health). The technology that detects these risks is spirometry, which calculates lung-function values to indicate whether a person may be at risk. The people most affected are Indias lower-income and rural populations, who face the highest environmental and lifestyle risks yet have the least access: an advanced spirometer costs ₹20,000 and upwards, confining it to well-funded urban facilities. This is fundamentally a problem of fairness and development, a healthcare system that relies on technology priced out of reach for a large segment of the population. The specific problem I have identified is that low-income and rural communities in India lack an affordable, accessible way to gain early awareness of their lung health, highlighting the urgent need for a low-cost solution that can raise respiratory-health awareness reliably in low-resource settings. Without it, these communities remain the least informed about the very risks they are most exposed to.
