My interest in this issue started in Grade 9 Economics, where I learned about Indias buffer stock system and its role in food security. During the lesson, I was shocked to discover that large amounts of stored food grains can be lost due to rodent attacks, pest infestations, bacteria, fungi, moisture, and poor storage conditions. This made me think: if food grains are produced with so much effort, why are so many lost before reaching the people who need them? I found that grain spoilage is a common but often ignored issue that affects farmers, warehouses, storage facilities, and public distribution systems. Changes in temperature, too much humidity, bad ventilation, and pest infestations can damage grains well before we see any obvious signs of spoilage. Although the country uses different storage methods like warehouses and silos, losses still happen due to environmental, operational, and access-related issues. The impact is especially harsh for small and marginal farmers. Many do not have access to affordable and effective storage facilities. As a result, they often have to sell their crops right after harvest when market prices are at their lowest. Instead of getting better prices later, they end up accepting lower returns to avoid storage losses, which threatens their income, food and financial security. The problem goes beyond individual farmers. When food grains are lost or spoiled during storage, we also waste valuable resources like land, water, energy, and labor. Meanwhile, many low-income families still face food insecurity and lack enough access to nutritious food. This creates a troubling situation. While food is being lost due to avoidable storage issues, millions of people still struggle to find enough to eat.
