In many towns and cities, roads are repeatedly resurfaced by adding new layers of asphalt or concrete over existing roads. Over time, this gradually increases the road level. As roads rise, older footpaths, house entrances, and shop entrances become lower than the road surface.
To maintain access, property owners often construct individual concrete ramps of different heights, slopes, and designs. These ramps extend into public walking areas, creating an uneven and discontinuous surface for pedestrians.
As a result, people cannot walk comfortably along the roadside and are often forced to step onto the road itself, increasing interaction with moving vehicles. The problem is especially difficult for elderly people, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and children who may struggle to navigate steep or irregular surfaces.
Additionally, when road levels rise above surrounding properties, rainwater drainage can be affected, increasing the possibility of water entering homes and shops during heavy rainfall.
This issue develops gradually over many years, making it easy to overlook despite its significant impact on pedestrian safety, accessibility, and urban infrastructure.
