However, this dependence has created a major environmental challenge.A large portion of everyday plastic products is designed for single or short-term use. Many of these materials are difficult to recycle because they contain multiple layers or mixed materials. As a result, large amounts of plastic waste end up in landfills, open dumping sites, rivers, lakes, and oceans.Unlike organic waste, plastic does not decompose quickly. It can remain in the environment for hundreds of years, slowly breaking down into tiny particles called microplastics. These microplastics contaminate soil, water, and food chains and have been found in drinking water, marine life, agricultural lands, and even the human body.Plastic pollution also harms wildlife. Animals, birds, and marine organisms often mistake plastic for food or become entangled in plastic waste, leading to injury or death. In cities, discarded plastic blocks drainage systems, causing flooding and sanitation issues.Despite awareness campaigns and efforts to follow the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, plastic waste generation continues to rise. Many daily-use plastic products lack affordable and practical alternatives, making it difficult for people to avoid their use completely.Therefore, there is an urgent need for innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce, replace, manage, or recycle everyday plastic waste.
