Vehicular air pollution is one of the leading causes of poor air quality in urban areas. Although Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates are intended to regulate emissions, the current system faces several challenges, including fake certificates, irregular inspections, manual errors, corruption, and a lack of continuous monitoring.
Many vehicles continue to operate while emitting pollutants beyond permissible limits because emissions are checked only periodically rather than in real time. Vehicle owners may obtain certificates without proper testing, and authorities often lack accurate, up-to-date data to identify high-polluting vehicles. This creates a trust gap between citizens, testing agencies, and enforcement authorities, while allowing harmful emissions to remain unchecked.
The absence of a transparent and automated monitoring mechanism makes it difficult to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. As a result, cities experience worsening air pollution, increased healthcare burdens, and reduced public confidence in pollution-control systems.
There is a need for a reliable, tamper-proof, and real-time emission monitoring solution that can continuously track vehicle emissions, provide accurate data, support fair enforcement, and encourage timely vehicle maintenance. Such a system would help reduce pollution, improve public health, strengthen environmental governance, and contribute to cleaner and more sustainable cities.
